Our Name

Roy & Dora Whitman Academy

Whitman Academy was named in loving memory of Roy and Dora Whitman. Roy came to the Levant region in 1925, and in 1930 began his work in Amman. Roy and Dora Whitman helped establish the basis for every Evangelical denomination in Jordan. Roy was a dedicated scholar of the Arabic language. Dora founded refugee relief work agencies in the country and had a love for literature and music.

Roy and Dora faithfully labored for the Lord in Jordan and other neighboring countries for 61 years, encouraging and strengthening Arab believers.  Although the Whitmans were never blessed with their own children, many Arab Christians consider them their spiritual parents. The school carries on their name and reputation in the region. We desire to see our students follow the Whitman’s example of faithful, loving service to those around them.

Roy died on Christmas Day in 1992 in Mafraq, Jordan, at the age of 88. Dora died in the summer of 1994 just a month shy of her 89th birthday. A book on Roy Whitman has been written in Arabic and translated into English by one of the Jordanian believers who did many hours of personal interviews with the Whitmans and with those they influenced.

UPST0054

Whitman Academy welcomes children from all cultural backgrounds. The multinational atmosphere stimulates greater understanding and compassion for all individuals and fosters a global perspective in the students. The school was originally founded to serve the educational needs of Christian expatriates who have come to Jordan in service capacities or as language students; therefore enrollment priority is given to these children.

Whitman Academy is licensed by the Ministry of Education as a school for foreign students.

In 1994, God brought together three expatriate families with children in kindergarten through 6th grade, with an experienced, certified, American teacher. These families had a vision for quality, Christian educational opportunities for their English speaking TCK children. They wanted them to experience creative, hands-on learning and have opportunities for servant leadership that would mould the hearts of their children to want to make a difference in the world. This vision is the foundation for all programming at Whitman Academy. Today, Whitman Academy has expanded to a body of 239 students from grades 1-12 from over 22 different countries.

An international, Christian education that equips students to think deeply, lead humbly and serve the world.
